The medical program of the Carolina & Florida Centers for Weight Management follows the guidelines of the American Society of Bariatric Physicians. Each step is discussed and explained in detail to each patient. Our current patient population ranges from ages 17 to 83. Each patient is individually treated and their program is specifically designed.
“I would like each patient to have the same expectation they would have if they came to me for treatment of pneumonia. The expectation would be that after a reasonable treatment they would be cured. I hope you will allow me to help you live a healthier life.”
- Jeffrey D. Seder, MD
There are five components to our program.
A.
Initial Evaluation:
The initial evaluation is offered WITHOUT CHARGE to each patient. During this step our program is explained as well as the pathophysiology of obesity and excess weight. A detailed medical history is obtained including but not limited to the past medical history, family medical history and discussion of the current goals of new patients. The purpose of this visit is to allow our staff to review the medical history of each client in order to make certain our program is not only appropriate for each patient but also to make certain success will be achieved.
B.
Medical and Laboratory Evaluation:
During this portion of our program each patient will undergo a detailed medical examination. When appropriate, gynecological examinations are deferred to the patient’s obstetrician & gynecologist. Based upon this examination a laboratory evaluation is scheduled. Because losing weight is a strain on the body as is gaining weight it is of paramount importance to evaluate the patient as a whole entity. For example, hypertension, diabetes, sleep apnea, electrolyte imbalances and other medical conditions need to be stabilized prior to initiating Bariatric (weight reduction) treatment.
C.
Treatment:
Each patient is treated with a specifically designed program. Not only will an individual diet be recommended but also medications may be entertained. Co-existing medical disorders will also be treated. The laboratory findings are also reviewed so each patient completely understands their results. Exercise is also incorporated in our program. Exercise and physical activity is attempted to be incorporated into ones lifestyle gradually to ensure safe and effective results.
D.
Follow visits:
Generally patients are followed monthly. However, follow up visits are based upon individual needs. Additional evaluations may also be requested by each patient. We have an “open door” policy to allow patients to seek supplementary assistance. It is important to follow patients as they lose weight. Co-existing medical disorders and medicines may require further adjustment. For example, it is common for the requirement of blood pressure medication to be reduced as weight is lost. A similar finding is also routine with the medications that treat diabetes.
D.
Maintenance program:
Once a patient is successful in reaching their goals to lose weight we have a specific program to ensure that the weight loss is maintained. We want you to lose weight once. Our maintenance program will avoid the common cycling of weight loss-gain that is found with non-medically based programs.
